KATHMANDU, JUNE 25
Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Paudel on Tuesday emphasized the need for a new Customs Act to streamline customs procedures, promote accountability, and facilitate safe and efficient international trade.
Speaking at the National Assembly's Committee for Legislation Management during discussions on the proposed Customs Bill, Paudel said the updated law would enhance customs efficiency, support economic development, and protect domestic industries.
"The bill is designed to simplify customs procedures, adopt technology-friendly systems, and promote exports and foreign direct investment, while curbing illegal trade," said Minister Paudel. He added that the draft includes revised duties, responsibilities, and powers of customs officers.
The bill, which seeks to amend and consolidate 154 clauses, had previously been reviewed by the Finance Committee of the House of Representatives and forwarded to the National Assembly with recommendations. So far, 21 lawmakers have proposed changes to 133 points, and the Finance Committee has submitted feedback on 88 provisions.
Committee Chairperson Tulasha Kumari Dahal expressed concern over receiving the extensive bill just five days before the committee's response deadline, calling it a significant challenge.
