KATHMANDU, MAY 5

An American climber died while attempting to climb Mt Makalu last night, according to expedition organiser.

Iswari Paudel, Managing Director at Himalayan Guides, confirmed that Alexander Pancoe breathed his last at Camp II on Mt Makalu.

The Illinois-based 39-year-old climber died of cardiac arrest while resting at Camp II, Paudel quoted fellow climbers as saying from the high camp.

"Alex felt uncomfortable while he returned from the camp III of the 8,485-metre mountain completing his acclimatisation rotation," he informed.

Alex, the founder of "Peaks of Mind", has completed has already accomplished 'The Explorers Grand Slam', an adventurers challenge to reach the North Pole, the South Pole and all Seven Summits.

Alex, a brain tumor survivor, climbed Mt Everest on May 23 in 2019, dedicating his climb of Everest to Serena Lewis, a teenager who shares a special bond, according to reports.

The US Embassy in Kathmandu and his family have been informed about the incident, Paudel said, adding that efforts were underway to airlift his body from the high camp.
